How it looks

What does it mean?

The flag of Bermuda is a British Red Ensign defaced with the colony's coat of arms. Red field, Union Jack in the canton, and on the fly a red lion standing on a grassy mount, holding an antique shield that depicts the wreck of the Sea Venture. That ship ran aground on Bermuda's reefs during a hurricane in July 1609, carrying 150 colonists bound for Jamestown, Virginia. The accidental landing founded the Bermuda colony, fed straight into Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' two years later, and is the only national flag on earth that builds itself around a shipwreck.

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ is one of the more posted small-island flags despite a population of only ~64,700 people. The cultural footprint runs far ahead of the demographic one. It shows up around three things online: pink-sand beaches and cruise itineraries, the Bermuda Triangle (more meme than menace at this point), and the reinsurance industry that quietly sits in Hamilton and writes around 36% of the world's property-casualty reinsurance. The diaspora is small (the largest overseas Bermudian community is 5,800 in England and Wales) but tight, and ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ functions as a code-flag among Bermudians abroad more than as a mass-cultural signal.

The emoji is a regional indicator sequence: + . Added in Emoji 2.0 (2015) alongside most country-flag sequences. Platforms that don't render flag emoji fall back to the letters . The Bermuda flag was first hoisted in its current Red Ensign form on October 4, 1910, with the coat of arms enlarged in a 1999 redesign. Bermuda is one of very few British Overseas Territories that flies a red ensign on land instead of the more common blue ensign, a holdover from 19th-century merchant-shipping conventions.

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ splits cleanly across four feeds.

Travel content drives the biggest slice. Pink-sand beaches at Horseshoe Bay, Crystal Caves, the Royal Naval Dockyard, and rum-swizzle videos at the Swizzle Inn all anchor the standard Bermuda travel post. Cruise ships sailing out of New York, Boston, and Norfolk run a May-to-October Bermuda season that floods Instagram and TikTok with #Bermuda content; in 2024 the island welcomed 535,000+ cruise visitors plus 139,546 leisure air visitors.

Bermuda Triangle content drives sharp meme spikes. The TikTok Bermuda Triangle meme leans into childhood-fear nostalgia and 'why isn't this a bigger problem' jokes. The Bermuda Tourism Authority quietly leans into it now, with their own posts pointing out that 'our 21-square-mile island in the North Atlantic is far more than the legend.' ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ”บ is the standard combo.

Sailing and finance. Bermuda hosted the 35th America's Cup in 2017, and ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒโ›ต still shows up around the Newport Bermuda Race (every two years) and the World Triathlon Championship Series stop. The reinsurance industry uses ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ in industry posts about ILS, catastrophe bonds, and hurricane-season retro placements.

Diaspora. Cup Match week (the Thursday/Friday before the first Monday of August) and Bermuda Day (last Friday of May) are the two big diaspora-homecoming windows, and ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ spikes in posts from Bermudians in Sheffield, Nottingham, and Birmingham, Toronto, and the New York metro.

Origin story

The story of the flag is the story of the colony, and both start with the same shipwreck.

1609: the wreck. The English ship Sea Venture, carrying 150 colonists and supplies for the struggling Jamestown settlement in Virginia, ran into a hurricane in late July 1609. Admiral Sir George Somers deliberately drove the foundering ship onto Bermuda's reefs to keep her from sinking with all hands. Everyone aboard made it to land. The colonists spent ten months on the uninhabited island building two new ships from Bermuda cedar and the Sea Venture's salvaged timbers, reached Jamestown in May 1610, then went back to settle Bermuda properly in 1612. News of the wreck reached London in 1610. Shakespeare wrote 'The Tempest' the next year.

1635: the first arms. The first coat of arms incorporating the Sea Venture wreck was granted around 1635, only twenty-five years after the event. The composition has barely changed: a red lion, a grassy mount, an antique shield with a stylized scene of the ship in the rigging being dashed against the cliffs.

1707-1801: ensigns at sea. Bermuda flew the British Red Ensign at sea from the 1707 Acts of Union onward, like every other British colony.

1910: the warrant. On October 4, 1910, King Edward VII signed the Royal Warrant formally granting Bermuda the right to fly the Red Ensign defaced with the colony's coat of arms. Most British colonies got Blue Ensigns; Bermuda is one of the rare exceptions, having continuously used the Red Ensign on land since the 1800s.

1999: the redesign. The current flag took shape in 1999 when the coat of arms was substantially enlarged, making the Sea Venture scene visible from a distance for the first time. Earlier versions had a small badge that was almost illegible on the fly.

The Latin motto under the shield, 'Quo Fata Ferunt' ('Whither the Fates Carry Us'), is the only national motto on earth that openly admits the country was founded by accident.

Around the world

Inside Bermuda

Bermudians use ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ around Bermuda Day, Cup Match, sports moments, and after hurricanes (a quiet 'we got through it' signal). National pride runs strong but quiet. Loud flag-waving is more typical of the diaspora than of residents, who are more likely to fly the actual flag from a flagpole than to spam the emoji.

Bermudian diaspora

The 5,800 Bermudians in England and Wales and the smaller communities in Toronto and the New York metro use ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ the way every diaspora uses its flag emoji: as a code-flag for the in-group. Cup Match week, Bermuda Day, and any cricket result drive most of it. The Brussels BIO Cultural Showcase launched in July 2025 is the newest diaspora-promotion node.

Cruise tourists and travel creators

This is where ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ explodes in volume but flattens in meaning. Travel TikTok and Instagram use ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ to label any pink-sand-beach post, any rum-swizzle video, any Crystal Caves visit. The flag tags the location, not an identity. The Bermuda Tourism Authority's own @bermuda TikTok runs ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ on every post.

Reinsurance and finance Twitter

A small but loud niche. ILS analysts, catastrophe-bond traders, and reinsurance journalists use ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ around hurricane-season retro placements, BMA regulatory updates, and post-Monte Carlo Rendez-Vous renewal commentary. The flag here means 'company domiciled in Hamilton', not 'I'm Bermudian.'

Why is Bermuda's flag red when other British territories use blue?

Bermuda is one of the only British Overseas Territories that flies a Red Ensign on land instead of the more typical Blue Ensign. The red dates back to 19th-century merchant-shipping conventions: Bermuda's economy ran on shipping, and the merchant Red Ensign got adopted ashore. Royal Warrant formalized it on October 4, 1910.

What's the Bermuda Triangle and is it on the flag?

The Bermuda Triangle is a roughly triangular region of the North Atlantic between Miami, San Juan, and Bermuda where ships and planes have been said to disappear under mysterious circumstances. Statistical analyses show the area has no higher loss rate than equally trafficked ocean. It's not on the flag, but ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ”บ is the most common Bermuda Triangle emoji combo on social.

Why is Bermuda called 'the Onion'?

Between roughly 1830 and 1920, Bermuda was the largest exporter of sweet onions to New York. The Bermuda Onion was a celebrity vegetable in turn-of-the-century America. When Texas planted the same variety in volume, the export collapsed, but the nickname stuck. Bermudians still call themselves Onions, and it shows up affectionately in greetings ('Later, Onion').

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ cruise season vs leisure-air arrivals (2024 quarters)

Bermuda runs a sharp May-October cruise season (bars, left axis, in thousands) overlaid on a more even leisure-air pattern (line, right axis, in thousands). Cruise arrivals nearly tripled the air-leisure traffic in 2024 (535K cruise vs 139K air-leisure). Hurricane season effectively closes the cruise window in Q4, while air arrivals stay open year-round for business travel into the reinsurance market and for offshore-sailing events.

Say it the Bermudian way

Bermudian English is closer to British and Carolina accents than to the Caribbean Creoles. Locals call each other 'Onions' as a term of endearment, a holdover from Bermuda's 19th-century onion-export boom.

Viral moments

2017Twitter, Instagram
America's Cup 2017 in Hamilton
Bermuda hosted the 35th America's Cup on the Great Sound. Emirates Team New Zealand beat Oracle Team USA. The five-week event drove the biggest sustained ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ spike on Twitter and Instagram in the emoji's history, with broadcast partners adding ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ to every match graphic. Cup Village in the Royal Naval Dockyard was the central social-content engine.
2023TikTok
Bermuda Triangle TikTok meme cycle
Childhood-nostalgia content about being scared of the Bermuda Triangle as a kid hit a viral peak across TikTok in 2023, with a recurring format of 'why is no one solving this?' The Bermuda Tourism Authority leaned in, posting their own jokes about how the island is bigger than the triangle. ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ”บ became a stock combo for any conspiracy-adjacent or 'unsolved mystery' content.
2022Twitter / X
Hurricane Fiona 2022 and the BMA
Hurricane Fiona passed close to Bermuda in September 2022 as a Category 4. Local Twitter ran on ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ storm-prep and post-storm 'we're fine' posts; reinsurance Twitter used ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ to track the event's projected industry loss in real time, since Bermuda's market underwrites a heavy share of US Atlantic catastrophe risk. The pattern repeats every major Atlantic season.

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ cultural footprint vs Caribbean BOT cousins

Directional comparison across five attributes Bermudians and visitors actually post about: pink-sand beach reputation, mystery/triangle pull, sailing & yachting, finance/reinsurance, and cricket culture. Scaled 0-100, qualitative scoring from cumulative tourism, finance, and sports coverage. Bermuda's outlier metrics are the Bermuda Triangle pull and the reinsurance hub, both of which dominate any Caribbean BOT.

Often confused with

๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡พ Flag: Cayman Islands

๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡พ (Cayman Islands) is the closest visual cousin: a Blue Ensign with a coat of arms on the fly. Bermuda is the rare Red Ensign on land, Cayman uses the more standard Blue Ensign. If you see red field = Bermuda; blue field = Cayman.

๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ธ Flag: Montserrat

๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ธ (Montserrat), ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฎ (Anguilla), ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡จ (Turks and Caicos), and ๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿ‡ฌ (British Virgin Islands) all use the standard Blue Ensign with their own coats of arms. Bermuda is the visual outlier in the British Caribbean / Atlantic family because of the red field.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Flag: United Kingdom

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ keeps the Union Jack in the canton because Bermuda is still a British Overseas Territory and has been continuously British since 1612. People sometimes use ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง instead of ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ in business posts about Bermuda; it works but loses the Sea Venture reference.

Is Bermuda in the Caribbean?

No. Bermuda sits in the North Atlantic, about 1,070 km east of North Carolina and 1,770 km north of San Juan, Puerto Rico. It's culturally and economically tied to the Caribbean (cricket, British colonial heritage, similar tourism patterns), but geographically it's a long way north of the Caribbean Sea. The closest landmass is the US East Coast.

Fun facts

  • โ€ขBermuda is the oldest remaining British Overseas Territory, continuously British since 1612. Older than the United States by 164 years.
  • โ€ขThe Sea Venture shipwreck inspired Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' (1611). The play's magical island, storm, and castaways pull directly from contemporary accounts of the wreck written by survivors William Strachey and Sylvester Jourdain. Bermuda is the only flag on earth whose coat of arms inspired a Shakespeare play.
  • โ€ขBermudians are nicknamed 'Onions' because Bermuda was the world's largest exporter of sweet onions to New York between 1830 and 1920. The export collapsed when Texas planted the same variety. The nickname stuck.
  • โ€ขBermuda has the northernmost coral reefs in the world, warmed by the Gulf Stream. The reefs are why so many ships, including the Sea Venture, hit Bermuda.
  • โ€ขThe pink in Bermuda's pink-sand beaches comes from foraminifera, single-celled red-shelled sea creatures whose remains mix with white coral sand.
  • โ€ขBermuda shorts are formal business attire on the island. The traditional combo is shorts (just above the knee), knee-high socks, dress shoes, blazer, and tie. Government ministers wear them in parliament.
  • โ€ขBermuda's reinsurance market wrote $171 billion in gross premium in 2023, roughly 36% of global property-casualty reinsurance, from a 21-square-mile island.
  • โ€ขBermuda is the only continuously Black-majority British Overseas Territory in the Atlantic; ~52% of residents identify as Black, ~31% as white, ~9% as multiracial, with a sizeable Portuguese-Bermudian community descended from 19th-century Azorean migrant farmworkers.
