Flag: Bahrain Emoji

The flag of Bahrain is a red field with a white band at the hoist, separated by a five-pointed serrated zigzag. The five white triangles represent the Five Pillars of Islam: shahada (faith), salat (prayer), zakat (almsgiving), sawm (Ramadan fasting), and hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca). Red is the traditional color of the Kharijite branch of Islam that shaped Gulf emirates from the 8th century and the historic color of Bahrain's rulers. White was added in 1820 as a concession to the British General Maritime Treaty, differentiating Bahrain's flag from the plain-red banners pirates were flying in the Gulf at the time.

The current five-point design is the third serrated version. Bahrain's flag has had 28 points (pre-1932), then eight points (1932 to 2002), then its current five (since February 14, 2002) to map cleanly onto the Five Pillars. The 2002 revision was part of the package of reforms that turned Bahrain into a constitutional kingdom.

Bahrain is small: about 1.57 million residents across 33 islands totaling 786 km², smaller than Singapore. The Formula 1 season opener. The Bahrain Grand Prix has been the season-opener most years since 2006 and holds a unique place as the first-ever F1 race in the Middle East, run on April 4, 2004. Ashura. Bahrain is the only majority-Shia Arab state (roughly 60 to 65% of citizens are Shia), and the Ashura commemorations on the 10th of Muharram (July 2026) mark the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali at Karbala. The processions in Manama and Sitra, along with black-flag mourning posts, are distinctive and don't pair to National Day energy at all. They reflect a quieter, more religious register.

Banking and finance content. Manama has been the Gulf's oldest banking hub since the 1970s, when it positioned itself between oil Saudi Arabia and tech-light Dubai. 🇧🇭 shows up on financial services, fintech, and offshore-banking feeds at a rate well above what the country's size would predict.

The Pearling Path. In 2012, Muharraq's Pearling Trail became a UNESCO World Heritage site, covering 17 buildings tied to Bahrain's centuries-long pearling industry that collapsed in the 1930s when Japanese cultured pearls flooded the market. The Path is a recurring travel-content subject.

Landmarks that anchor travel content

Bahrain's earliest known flags were plain red banners, the color of the 8th-century Kharijite Ibadi sect that took root across the Gulf and of the Al Khalifa dynasty that has ruled the emirate since 1783. The pure red field persisted for more than a millennium.

1820: the General Maritime Treaty. After decades of piracy disrupting Gulf trade, Britain forced the Trucial States (including Bahrain) to sign the 1820 General Maritime Treaty, which banned piracy and required distinguishing marks. Bahrain added a white vertical band at the hoist. The change stuck.

1932: the 28-point serrated edge. Gulf states began adopting serrated white-red flag variants to differentiate among themselves. Bahrain set its count at 28 points. The shape read as a zigzag maritime flag that could be distinguished from Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Qatar at a distance.

1972: eight points. The year after Bahrain gained independence from Britain (August 15, 1971), the flag was simplified to eight points, making the serration more legible at small sizes.

February 14, 2002: five points. King Hamad bin Isa, the day he transformed Bahrain from an emirate into a constitutional kingdom and launched the National Action Charter reforms, reduced the points to five so each could explicitly represent one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Ratio was set at 3:5. That's the flag you see today.

Color standards. Conventional hex references: red #CE1126#CE1126, white #FFFFFF#FFFFFF. The red is a classic primary red, noticeably brighter than Qatar's maroon.
