How it looks
What does it mean?
The flag of Sark, a tiny island in the Channel Islands between England and France. Sark is a Crown dependency of the British Crown and one of the smallest self-governing territories in the world, with approximately 500 residents.
The flag features a red background with a white St. Andrew's Cross (saltire) and two gold Norman lions in the upper canton. It's one of the most obscure flag emojis in Unicode, representing a territory that most people have never heard of.
But Sark is fascinating. It was the last feudal state in Europe until its first democratic elections in December 2008. Cars are banned: only tractors, bicycles, and horse-drawn vehicles are allowed. There's no public street lighting. And in 2011, Sark became the world's first Dark Sky Island, designated by the International Dark-Sky Association for its virtually zero light pollution, making it one of the best stargazing locations on Earth.
For a place with 500 people, Sark has more interesting facts per capita than anywhere else on the planet.
Extremely rare usage. Primarily used by Sark residents, Channel Islands enthusiasts, vexillologists (flag collectors/enthusiasts), geography nerds, and people discovering obscure flag emojis. Also appears in Dark Sky and astronomy communities when discussing light pollution.
The flag emoji's existence is itself a curiosity. The Unicode regional indicator system generates flags for all ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 codes, which includes even the smallest territories. Sark got its own emoji flag not because of lobbying but because the system is comprehensive.
The flag of Sark, a tiny Channel Island with ~500 residents. One of the most obscure flag emojis. Sark was the last feudal state in Europe (until 2008), is the world's first Dark Sky Island, and bans cars.

What it means from...
If your crush sends the flag of Sark, they're either from a 500-person island (statistically unlikely), a geography enthusiast (interesting), or testing your knowledge of obscure territories (even more interesting). Any of these is a conversation starter.
Geography games, travel bucket lists, or the 'most obscure flag emoji' challenge. Sark is a great answer to 'name a country I've never heard of' (even though it's not technically a country).
Unlikely in professional contexts unless you work in travel, geography, astronomy, or Channel Islands governance.
Vexillology content, Channel Islands travel blogs, Dark Sky community posts, or the eternal internet game of finding the most obscure emoji.
Flirty or friendly?
If someone sends you the flag of Sark, they're not flirting: they're testing your geography or sharing a fascinating discovery. But someone who knows about Sark is probably interesting to talk to.

Origin story
Sark has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. In 1565, Helier de Carteret colonized the island under a charter from Elizabeth I, establishing the Seigneurie: the feudal system that would govern Sark for over 440 years.
The feudal structure was remarkably well-preserved. The Seigneur (feudal lord) owned all land and had significant governance powers. The island's parliament, the Chief Pleas, included 40 landholders and 12 elected deputies. This system persisted until 2008, when Sark held its first fully democratic elections, transforming the Chief Pleas into a 28-member elected assembly. The Seigneur retained some ceremonial powers. The transition from feudalism to democracy was peaceful: Sark just... voted.
The car ban dates to the original feudal charter. Only tractors (introduced in the 1940s for farming), bicycles, and horse-drawn carriages are permitted. There's no public street lighting, no airport, and no chain stores. The island has one paved road. This absence of modern infrastructure is exactly what earned Sark its Dark Sky designation in 2011: the first island community in the world to receive it. On a clear night, you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye from virtually anywhere on the island.
Sark is 2.10 square miles (5.44 kmยฒ) with approximately 500 residents. It has its own flag, its own parliament, its own legal system: and now its own emoji.
Regional indicator sequence: (C) + (Q). Part of the flag emoji system where two-letter ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 codes generate flag emojis for territories worldwide. Sark's code is CQ.
Around the world
Most people have never heard of Sark. It exists in a governance category that's hard to explain: a Crown dependency of the British Crown, part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, but not part of the United Kingdom and not part of the European Union. It has its own laws, its own elected parliament, and its own identity.
For Channel Islanders, Sark is a real community with a real culture. For the rest of the world, it's a curiosity that seems too unusual to be real: a car-free, light-free, recently-feudal island where you can see more stars than almost anywhere in Europe.
In the English Channel between England and France, part of the Channel Islands. It belongs to the Bailiwick of Guernsey, a Crown dependency of the British Crown.
