How it looks
What does it mean?
π Lighthouse is a tall, banded coastal tower with a glowing beam emanating from its upper lamp room. The default proposed design shows the classic red-and-white striped tower silhouette that most people picture when they hear "lighthouse," sitting on a rocky outcrop with a horizontal beam projecting outward.
Lighthouses are one of the most requested missing emojis. Unicode rejected proposals in 2012, 2016, and 2020 before finally accepting one in the 2025 candidate round. The breakthrough argument centered on the lighthouse as a guidance/hope metaphor: it's used in AA and NA recovery literature, in mental health campaigns, in bereavement support contexts, and in career/life-advice content. The 2025 proposal cited measurable usage of "lighthouse" as a metaphor across social platforms that had no dedicated visual shorthand.

Origin story
The lighthouse emoji has a decade-long proposal history. Earlier attempts (as tracked by Emojipedia) failed because Unicode didn't find the case compelling relative to other candidates. The successful 2025 proposal (L2/25-256) made two new arguments: the lighthouse's metaphorical usage in recovery and mental health contexts (which Unicode has been increasingly receptive to), and its gap in travel/coastal emoji coverage next to β Anchor and π Water Wave. Targeted for Emoji 18.0, September 2026.
