What does it mean?

☢️ is the Radioactive Sign emoji: the international radiation-hazard trefoil, three black blades radiating 120 degrees apart from a central circle on a yellow background. It's one of the oldest symbols on the emoji keyboard and one of the youngest graphic icons still in active use: the shape was first doodled in 1946 at the University of California Radiation Laboratory by a small team led by Nels Garden, head of the Health Chemistry Group. Garden wrote that the design 'was supposed to represent activity radiating from an atom.' It has since been standardised by ANSI N2.1 and ISO 361 and appears on every commercial radiation source shipped internationally.

Unicode added U+2622 RADIOACTIVE SIGN in Unicode 1.1 in 1993, making it one of the earliest hazard symbols encoded. The colour emoji version came with Emoji 1.0 in 2015 via the variation selector U+FE0F. Apple drew it as a classic ISO yellow-and-black trefoil, Google matched, Microsoft went a slightly more orange route, and Samsung's glossy version briefly added a subtle 3D gradient before flattening in 2020.


Online, ☢️ has splintered into at least three meanings. One, the literal hazard marker for anything nuclear or radiation-related. Two, the 'toxic' metaphor: a person, relationship, workplace, or fandom labelled ☢️ is dangerously bad for your health. Three, the intensifier: a basketball play, a guitar solo, a spicy take gets ☢️ because it's 'nuclear level.' Search interest for 'radioactive emoji' doubled between 2020 and 2026, driven partly by HBO's Chernobyl (2019)), partly by Fallout 4 and Fallout: London (2024)), and partly by the slow-burn success of Imagine Dragons' 'Radioactive') which is still gaining streams a decade after its 2012 release.

☢️ is used roughly three ways on English-language social media. Most common is the 'toxic relationship / toxic person' framing: Urban Dictionary and Gen Z content guides both list this as the default meaning. Second is gaming usage, where ☢️ is essentially synonymous with the Fallout franchise) and shows up in clan tags, game captions, and any post about nuclear-themed content. Third is the literal hazard usage: scientists, science communicators, and nuclear-industry accounts all use ☢️ for genuine radiation topics.

There's a fourth usage worth calling out: climate and energy discourse. Pro-nuclear advocates (Twitter's #NuclearNow crowd, various climate newsletters) use ☢️ affectionately to mean 'clean power.' Anti-nuclear activists use the same emoji to mean 'dangerous disaster waiting to happen.' The symbol ends up doing opposite semantic work depending on who posts it, which makes ☢️ one of the few emojis that can mean 'this is good' and 'this is bad' to different tribes simultaneously.

The Alert Symbols Family

Emojipedia groups 14 emojis under "Alert", the category for signs designed to stop you in your tracks. Most arrived together in Unicode 6.0 (2010) as pictograms for real-world signage standardised by ISO 3864 and ISO 7010. Two members (☢️ radioactive, ☣️ biohazard) are much older typographic symbols borrowed from nuclear and biological safety labs. And one (📛 name badge) is an outlier from Japanese kindergartens that ended up classified as an alert because of its red, flame-like silhouette.

Origin story

The radioactive trefoil was designed in 1946 at UC Berkeley's Radiation Laboratory by a small team led by Nels Garden. Garden wrote that the design was meant to represent 'activity radiating from an atom.' The three 120-degree blades around a central circle were specifically chosen to be instantly recognisable and unlike any existing symbol. There are unconfirmed theories that the design was inspired by the Japanese rising-sun flag or by the spinning-propeller warning signs at a nearby naval dry dock, but Garden's own account just describes 'a number of people in the group' sketching motifs until this one stuck.

The 1946 version was magenta on blue. The magenta was Martin Senour Roman Violet No. 2225, an expensive paint Garden chose because 'its high cost would deter others from using this color promiscuously.' The blue background didn't survive outdoors: paint faded fast in sunlight. By 1948, Bill Ray and George Warlick at Oak Ridge had tested colour combinations and found magenta-on-yellow worked best when viewed at 20 feet. ANSI and federal regulations standardised the black-on-yellow version by the late 1950s.


On February 15, 2007, the IAEA and ISO released a supplementary ionising radiation warning symbol (ISO 21482) featuring radiating waves, a skull and crossbones, and a running figure. The new symbol is intended for high-risk sealed radiation sources where someone might dismantle equipment without knowing what's inside. It exists alongside, not instead of, the original trefoil.

Approved in Unicode 1.1 in 1993 as U+2622 RADIOACTIVE SIGN. One of the earliest hazard symbols encoded. The colour emoji presentation (U+2622 U+FE0F) was added as part of Emoji 1.0 in 2015.

Nels Garden and the 1946 Trefoil

In 1946, Nels Garden was head of the Health Chemistry Group at UC Berkeley's Radiation Laboratory. The lab was expanding fast after the Manhattan Project, radioisotope work was starting up in the basement, and nobody had a consistent sign for 'do not enter this room without a dosimeter.' Garden's group needed a warning symbol. In a later letter, Garden wrote: 'A number of people in the group took an interest in suggesting different motifs, and the one arousing the most interest was a design which was supposed to represent activity radiating from an atom.' That design was the trefoil.
The original colour scheme was magenta on blue. Specifically: Martin Senour Roman Violet No. 2225. Garden later explained that magenta was chosen because it was 'distinctive and did not conflict with any color code' they were familiar with, and he figured its high cost would 'deter others from using this color promiscuously.' The blue background faded badly in sunlight, leading to complaints from workers. In early 1948, Bill Ray and George Warlick at Oak Ridge National Laboratory tested colour combinations outdoors at 20 feet and found magenta on yellow worked best. By the late 1950s, ANSI and federal regulations standardised black-on-yellow, which is now the global default.

Design history

The 2007 'Running Person' Redesign

The trefoil has one big problem: most people outside science don't know what it means. The IAEA discovered in field testing that children and non-experts often interpreted the trefoil as a propeller, a fan, or simply a decorative shape. If you're stacking a gamma irradiator in a scrapyard and you see a pretty pinwheel, that's a problem.
On February 15, 2007, the IAEA and ISO jointly released a supplementary warning: the same trefoil, but with radiating waves, a skull and crossbones, and a running figure with an arrow, all on a red background. The design is codified as ISO 21482 and is intended for sealed sources in IAEA Categories 1, 2, and 3, the most dangerous ones. The message is unambiguous: danger, run away, do not touch. The old trefoil stays in use for outer packaging and general signage; the running-person version goes inside the shielding where only someone dismantling the source would see it.

☣️ is the biohazard symbol, designed by Dow Chemical's Charles Baldwin in 1966 for biological agents. ☢️ is specifically for ionising radiation. Different origins, different standards, different use cases.

⚛️ Atom Symbol

⚛️ is the atom/atomic symbol, an abstract model of electron orbitals. It's a generic science icon, often used for atheism (the American Atheists logo) or for physics content. ☢️ is specifically a hazard marker.

⚠️ Warning

⚠️ is the generic warning triangle. ☢️ is a specific warning, radiation. Use ⚠️ for content warnings and generic caution; use ☢️ when you literally mean nuclear, toxic, or metaphorically 'radioactive.'

💀 Skull

💀 is the skull (now used most often for 'dying of laughter' on Gen Z Twitter). The 2007 IAEA supplementary radiation sign pairs 💀 with ☢️ to reinforce lethal danger, but ☢️ alone does not imply death.

☢️ vs ☣️ vs 'toxic'

On the emoji keyboard, ☢️ (Radioactive) and ☣️ (Biohazard) look like a matched pair. They're not: biohazard is a 1966 Dow Chemical design, intentionally created by Charles Baldwin to have no prior cultural meaning, exactly so it could be taught as 'biological danger.' ☢️ traces to Berkeley, ☣️ to Dow. In social media, English speakers overwhelmingly search for the word 'toxic,' not either hazard symbol.
Quarterly Google search interest, worldwide. The word 'toxic' dominates by an order of magnitude, reflecting how much of modern discourse reuses the biohazard/radioactive vocabulary metaphorically. Radioactive emoji has climbed steadily post-2022 while biohazard emoji has held steady.

  • Fallout video game franchise: Fallout) has used the radioactive trefoil as its primary branding since the original 1997 release. Vault Boy giving a thumbs up in front of a mushroom cloud is effectively the same visual language as ☢️. Every Fallout game features the trefoil on in-world signage, armor, and UI.
  • Breaking Bad hazmat suits: Breaking Bad (2008-2013) visually leaned on hazard symbols, though technically the yellow suits are biohazard and chemical rather than radioactive. The show still seeded the 'yellow warning' aesthetic into 2010s TV drama.
  • HBO Chernobyl (2019): Chernobyl) used the trefoil aesthetic throughout its five-episode run. The show's opening title card, using the stark black-on-yellow, drove a brief fashion trend for trefoil-print clothing on Depop and Etsy.

Warning the Far Future

☢️ only works because you recognise it today. That's a problem if the radioactive waste outlasts the civilisation that made the sign. In the 1990s, Sandia National Laboratories commissioned designs for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in New Mexico, a deep salt-bed repository for transuranic nuclear waste that has to stay sealed for 10,000 years. Regular signs won't do. 10,000 years ago, Göbekli Tepe was fresh construction. Whoever opens WIPP in the year 12,000 CE may not read any language we currently speak.
The proposals got weird. Thomas Sebeok suggested an 'atomic priesthood': a rotating cabal of experts who'd keep the truth alive through ritual for thousands of years, modelled on the Catholic Church's 2,000-year institutional memory. Françoise Bastide and Paolo Fabbri proposed breeding 'ray cats' that would change colour when exposed to radiation. Sandia's own report suggested granite spikes, black pyramids, and hostile architecture designed to feel intuitively unwelcoming, with inscriptions reading 'This place is a message, and part of a system of messages. Sending this message was important to us. Pay attention to it!' The trefoil may not survive, but the conceptual problem it was built to solve is still open.
