How it looks

What does it mean?

The flag of French Guiana. An overseas region and department of France on the northeast shoulder of South America, squeezed between Suriname and Brazil. The ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ emoji renders differently depending on the platform: Apple iOS shows the plain French tricolor (the only legally official flag), while Google, Samsung, Microsoft, and WhatsApp show the unofficial regional flag designed in 1967 by the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers' Union. That unofficial design splits the field diagonally: green for the rainforest in the upper fly, gold for minerals and the sun in the lower hoist, with a red five-pointed star for the blood of workers (or socialist solidarity, depending on the reading).

French Guiana is small on every metric that drives flag emoji volume: around 295,000 people live here, English-language coverage is minimal, the diaspora in metropolitan France is visible but niche, and the territory sits outside both the Spanish and Portuguese social feeds that dominate South America. ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ spikes in three narrow windows: the Cayenne Carnival season from early January to Ash Wednesday (one of the longest carnivals on earth), Abolition Day on June 10 commemorating the 1848 end of slavery, and major rocket launches from the Guiana Space Centre at Kourou, which is the closest spaceport to the equator and has launched every Ariane rocket since 1979.

The emoji is a regional indicator sequence: + . It was added in Emoji 1.0 (2015). On platforms without flag support it falls back to the letters . Because French Guiana has no single legally official flag, the emoji's rendering inconsistency is legitimate, not a platform bug. European newsrooms covering Ariane launches tend to default to ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท or ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ instead of ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ, which suppresses the flag's visibility further.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ has a tiny baseline and three predictable spike windows.

Carnival season (January 6 to Ash Wednesday) is the biggest annual ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ posting window. The Cayenne Carnival runs every Sunday from Epiphany through Ash Wednesday, making it one of the longest carnivals in the world (roughly six weeks in 2026, January 6 to February 18). Every Saturday night, touloulou masked balls fill private dance halls called universitรฉs, where women in head-to-toe lace costumes invite men to dance while remaining anonymous. The tradition exists nowhere else. Cayenne locals and the diaspora in Paris, Guadeloupe, and Martinique all switch on ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ during this window.

Abolition Day on June 10 is the single most culturally charged day for Guianese identity. The French decree abolishing slavery was issued on April 27, 1848, but the news didn't reach Cayenne until June 10, so the local holiday anchors to the later date. Posts on June 10 carry ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ alongside ๐Ÿ”— and โ›“๏ธโ€๐Ÿ’ฅ emoji, wreaths at the Monument des Anciens Combattants, and references to Fรฉlix ร‰bouรฉ (the Cayenne-born governor who declared Free French allegiance in 1940).

Ariane rocket launches drive the biggest non-cultural ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ spikes. The Guiana Space Centre at Kourou sits only 5 degrees north of the equator, giving it the best launch economics on earth. The February 12, 2026 inaugural Ariane 64 launch carrying 32 satellites for Amazon Leo drew heavy ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ posting; ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ specifically spikes among space-journalism accounts and French-speaking aerospace Twitter, less so in English-language coverage.

The diaspora in metropolitan France is concentrated in รŽle-de-France (Paris) and the other Antilles. Guianese creole identity often reads as pan-Antillean on social: ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ next to ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ถ (Martinique), ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ต (Guadeloupe), or ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡น (Haiti) signals French Caribbean diaspora, often with kasรฉkรฒ or zouk references. Second-generation kids frequently drop ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ in favor of ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท or the pan-Antillean cluster.

Political moments occasionally push ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ into headlines. The March 2017 general strike paralyzed the territory for weeks, with the Collectif Pou Lagwiyann Dรฉkolรฉ (Let's Get Guiana Moving) demanding a one-billion-euro investment plan. The movement used ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ (the unofficial regional flag) heavily and treated it as a symbol of territorial grievance, not separatism.

What does ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ mean?

The flag of French Guiana, an overseas region and department of France on the northeast shoulder of South America. French Guiana has no single legally official flag: Apple iOS renders ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ as the French tricolor, while Google, Samsung, Microsoft, and WhatsApp render it as the unofficial regional flag (diagonal green-and-gold with a red five-pointed star).

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ in the Amazon Basin and the Guianas

Four flags that share the northeastern shoulder of South America. Brazil dwarfs everything in the region; the three Guianas sit on the other side of a linguistic and cultural wall from the Spanish-and-Portuguese continent. French Guiana is the one still attached to a European state, still inside the euro, and still launching Europe's rockets to space.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ in the Amazon basin: Google Trends, 2020 to 2026

Brazil dominates the regional search interest scale by an order of magnitude. French Guiana, Guyana, and Suriname all hover near the floor: populations under a million each, minimal English-language football or music coverage, and no world-stage tourism brand. The 2026 Q1 French Guiana bump is the Ariane 64 inaugural launch on February 12. Trends uses 'french guiana flag emoji' fallback keywords because the raw flag characters return near-zero.

Right now in Cayenne

French Guiana runs on GFT (UTC-3) year-round. Unlike metropolitan France, the territory never observes daylight saving time, so Cayenne is three hours behind Paris in winter and four hours behind in summer.

Origin story

French Guiana's relationship with flags is defined by the fact that it has no official flag of its own. As a French overseas region and department, the French tricolor is flown in all state contexts: prefecture buildings, municipal halls, schools, ceremonies. When a flag is needed to represent French Guiana abroad or at international events organized by France, it's always the tricolor.

The unofficial regional flag was born out of labor politics. In 1967 the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers' Union (confusingly named, given that modern French Guiana's name is 'Guyane' and Guyana the country is a different place) designed a flag for the union's own use. It divides the field diagonally: green for the forest, gold for the sun and mineral wealth, with a red five-pointed star for workers' struggle. The union adopted it in September 1967. Over the following decades the design was picked up by the French Guiana national football team (which plays in CONCACAF, not FIFA) and, much later, by the Departmental Council of French Guiana as a semi-official regional emblem. It has never been ratified as an official national flag.

The territory has been French since 1604, with a brief interruption during Portuguese and British occupations during the Napoleonic Wars (1809 to 1814). Unlike most of France's overseas empire, it was never successfully colonized for large-scale plantation agriculture: the rainforest and climate defeated every attempt. What made it useful to Paris was very different: from 1852 to 1953, it was France's main penal colony. Over 80,000 prisoners passed through the system, including the spy-case figure Alfred Dreyfus (1895 to 1899) and Henri 'Papillon' Charriรจre, whose escape memoir became a 1973 Hollywood film. Up to 90% of prisoners died.

In 1946 French Guiana became a full French department, integrating into the Republic with voting rights and social programs. In 1964 the French government chose Kourou as the site of the Guiana Space Centre, a decision that transformed the territory's economy. Since 1979 every Ariane rocket has launched from here, and the space industry now accounts for roughly 15% of local GDP. The March 2017 general strike, which blocked the Kourou launch pad for weeks, was a reminder that Kourou's prosperity hasn't evenly reached the rest of the territory.

The flag, close up

French Guiana has no single legally official flag. The French tricolor is what flies on government buildings; the green-gold-red unofficial flag (1967, union-designed) is what people actually post online. ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ renders as one or the other depending on the platform. Tap any swatch to copy the hex code.

Around the world

Inside French Guiana

Locals reserve ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ (the unofficial regional flag) for the two identity windows that metropolitan France doesn't share: Carnival and Abolition Day. In French contexts, especially around Bastille Day or Ariane launches, the French tricolor ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท is the default. Creole identity and French identity layer rather than compete.

Pan-Antillean diaspora in Paris

Around 30,000 to 40,000 Guianese live in metropolitan France, mostly in รŽle-de-France. The flag travels with them next to ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ถ ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ต ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡น as part of a French Caribbean cluster. Kasรฉkรฒ and zouk references tag the identity faster than any flag does. Second-generation kids often drop ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ and stay with ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท plus the Antillean cluster.

Aerospace and European space media

The Kourou launch site drives the biggest non-Carnival attention. European space journalists tend to pair ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท rather than use ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ, partly because English-language coverage rarely notes the distinction. French-language aerospace Twitter uses ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ much more consistently around launches.

Maroon and Amerindian communities

The interior is home to Bushinenge Maroon communities (Ndyuka, Saramaka, Paramaka, Aluku) descended from self-liberated enslaved Africans, and to Amerindian nations including the Kalina, Wayana, Wayampi, and Teko. Many of these communities have their own flags and identity markers that operate alongside rather than through ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ. ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ท (Suriname) often appears in Maroon posts because the same peoples straddle the Maroni River border.

Is French Guiana a country or a part of France?

A full part of France, and by extension a part of the European Union. French Guiana has been integrated as a French department since 1946 with the same rights and representation as any metropolitan department. Residents vote in French presidential and European parliamentary elections, the euro is legal tender, and Schengen rules apply. It is not an independent country and has no movement for independence.

Why does every Ariane rocket launch from French Guiana?

Because Kourou sits only 5 degrees north of the equator, giving rockets the biggest boost from Earth's rotation and the most efficient path to geostationary orbit. Kourou also has empty ocean to the east and north for safe flight paths. The Guiana Space Centre opened in 1968 and has hosted every Ariane launch since 1979, plus Vega and, during 2011 to 2022, Russian Soyuz.

What's Abolition Day and why is it on June 10?

June 10 is French Guiana's local holiday commemorating the end of slavery. The French decree abolishing slavery was signed in Paris on April 27, 1848, but news traveled slowly by ship and didn't reach Cayenne until June 10. The later date is what the territory celebrates, because that's when enslaved people in French Guiana actually became free. It's the most culturally charged Guianese holiday, separate from Bastille Day.

When ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ spikes: French Guiana seasonality, 2022 to 2026

Two reliable annual windows: January to February (Carnival) and June (Abolition Day on the 10th). Other spikes track Ariane launches (July 2024 maiden Ariane 6, February 2026 first Ariane 64). Absolute volume is small, so the chart is directional, not a volume comparison.

When ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ spikes: Carnival, Abolition Day, and rocket days

French Guiana observes all 11 French national holidays plus Abolition Day (June 10). Carnival isn't a single day but a six-week Sunday ritual from Epiphany to Ash Wednesday, the longest in the world.
  • ๐ŸŽญ
January 6 to February 18, 2026: Carnival: Six weeks of Sunday street parades through Cayenne plus Saturday touloulou balls. The longest carnival on earth. Peak ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ posting window.
  • ๐Ÿ”—
June 10: Abolition Day: Fรชte de l'abolition de l'esclavage. Marks the 1848 abolition of slavery reaching French Guiana. The most identity-charged local holiday.
  • ๐ŸŽ†
July 14: Bastille Day: Fรชte Nationale. Parade and fireworks in Cayenne. The French national day; less culturally weighted locally than Abolition Day.
  • ๐Ÿš€
Variable: major Ariane launches: Not a holiday, but a reliable attention spike. The February 12, 2026 inaugural Ariane 64 carrying 32 Amazon Leo satellites pulled global space coverage.
  • ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ
November 1: All Saints': La Toussaint. Families clean graves and light candles. Shared across France, observed more intensely in the Catholic Antilles.

Say it like a Guianese

French is the official everywhere. Guianese Creole (Krรฉyรฒl Gwiyanรจ) is the everyday language of most Cayenne families. A Creole word next to ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ reads as Guianese faster than any French phrase, because French alone could also mean metropolitan France, Guadeloupe, Martinique, or Africa.

2017Facebook, Twitter
Collectif Pou Lagwiyann Dรฉkolรฉ general strike
In March 2017, the Collectif Pou Lagwiyann Dรฉkolรฉ (Let's Get Guiana Moving, in Guianese Creole) called a general strike that paralyzed the territory for five weeks. Roadblocks cut off Cayenne, the Kourou launch pad was blockaded (suspending Ariane launches), and schools closed. The movement demanded a one-billion-euro investment plan. ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ (the unofficial regional flag) became the movement's symbol, appearing at every roadblock. Paris eventually signed the Plan d'Urgence, pledging โ‚ฌ2.1 billion.

The French Guiana national football team, which plays as a CONCACAF associate rather than a FIFA member, qualified for the 2017 Gold Cup in the United States. They wore the unofficial regional flag on their kit and went out in the group stage, but ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ briefly trended in CONCACAF football Twitter and among Caribbean diaspora accounts in the US.

Ariane 6 maiden flight from Kourou
On July 9, 2024, the Ariane 6 rocket made its maiden flight from Kourou after years of development delays. European space Twitter leaned heavily on ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ rather than ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ in coverage. Local outlets in Cayenne posted ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ celebrations as the launch pad roared back to life after a post-Ariane-5 gap.

Inaugural Ariane 64 launches 32 Amazon Leo satellites
On February 12, 2026, the first Ariane 64 (the four-booster variant of Ariane 6) lifted off from Kourou carrying 32 satellites for Amazon Leo, the broadband constellation formerly known as Project Kuiper. The launch marked Europe's most powerful rocket's operational debut and the first of 18 contracted Amazon flights. ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ briefly surged on French aerospace Twitter; English-language coverage barely used the flag.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ sits near the bottom of the flag emoji leaderboard

Directional ranking based on Unicode emoji frequency data and Meltwater social listening. French Guiana's low population (~295,000), niche diaspora, and rendering inconsistency across platforms all push the flag toward the tail of the leaderboard. The three Guianas cluster together, well below Brazil and below most of the Caribbean.

Often confused with

๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท Flag: France

This is the confusion: the only legally official flag of French Guiana is the French tricolor. On Apple iOS, ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ literally renders as the French flag with a small 'GF' label. On Google, Samsung, and Microsoft, ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ renders as the unofficial regional green-yellow flag. Same emoji, completely different picture. Post it cross-platform and people see different flags.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡พ Flag: Guyana

Guyana (next door to the west). English-speaking former British colony. Its flag is the Golden Arrowhead (a red triangle inside a yellow arrow over a green field). French Guiana's unofficial flag uses similar green-and-yellow palette with diagonal composition, so the two get lumped together. The dead giveaway: Guyana has a black-bordered red triangle, French Guiana's unofficial flag has a red five-pointed star.

๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ท Flag: Suriname

Suriname (the middle Guiana). Dutch-speaking former colony. Five horizontal stripes in green, white, red, white, green with a yellow star centered. Different palette logic, but outsiders frequently group the three Guianas together and use whichever flag emoji comes to mind first.

๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ณ Flag: Senegal

Senegal. Vertical green-yellow-red tricolor with a green five-pointed star centered. Same color family as French Guiana's unofficial flag (green, gold, red), different composition (vertical stripes instead of diagonal split). At small sizes some Android renderings of ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ can read as a misshapen Senegal.

How is ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ different from ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡พ (Guyana) and ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ท (Suriname)?

French Guiana is a French overseas department (French-speaking, euro, EU). Guyana is an independent country (English-speaking, former British colony, Caribbean-identifying). Suriname is also independent (Dutch-speaking, former Dutch colony, multi-ethnic). All three share the Guiana Shield geography and rainforest but sit in three different colonial orbits with three separate social feeds.

๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ renders as two completely different flags depending on your device
Apple iOS shows the French tricolor (plus small 'GF' letters); Google, Samsung, Microsoft, and WhatsApp show the unofficial green-gold-red star flag. Neither is 'wrong': French Guiana has no single legally official flag. When you post ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ cross-platform, followers on different devices see different images.
๐Ÿ’กAbolition Day (June 10), not Bastille Day (July 14), is the identity holiday
Guianese identity posts peak on June 10, the day the 1848 abolition of slavery reached Cayenne. Bastille Day exists and is a public holiday, but the Republican national day reads as metropolitan France first. ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ paired with ๐Ÿ”— or โ›“๏ธโ€๐Ÿ’ฅ on June 10 is the most unambiguous local-identity signal.
๐ŸŽฒThe only EU border with Brazil
The Oyapock River Bridge, opened in 2017, is the only land crossing between the European Union and Brazil. It connects Saint-Georges de l'Oyapock (France, EU, euro) to Oiapoque (Amapรก state, Brazil, real). You cross a single international bridge and change continent, currency, language, and time zone in the space of 300 meters.
